Candle To Blame For House Fire That Injured One In Maryland, Officials Say

One person was injured attempting to put out a house fire that was caused by a candle that sparked combustibles in Montgomery County, investigators say.

On Monday afternoon, Montgomery County Fire and EMS personnel were called to the 15400 block of Peach Leaf Drive off Quince Quince Road where there was a reported fire in the second floor of a single-family, split-level home.

According to officials, there was one person in the home when the fire broke out, and they were able to escape, though non-life-threatening injuries were reported after attempting to extinguish the fire before first responders arrived.

A cat was also able to escape unharmed.

Investigators said on Tuesday that the cause was determined to have been a candle that ignited nearby combustibles in a bedroom, setting off a smoke alarm.

The homeowner then attempted to knock down the flames on his own, but suffered burn injuries before getting out of the house.

The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
